CHINEKE/ GOD- Meaning & Pronunciation By Donald IfesinaChi (Dicn)
CHINEKE: Chineke is an original Christian title for God Almighty. The title got coined by early Igbo Christian Missionaries, who saw the need to coin an original Christian title for God Almighty and not to rest completely on the already existing pagan-coined title “Chukwu”. [See my post on “CHUKWU/ GOD”]. Peacefully, without feud and still in acceptance of the already existing title “Chukwu”, they coined the title “CHINEKE”.
The title/name “CHINEKE” is a combination of a Word and a Phrase, namely “CHI” (God or Deity) and “NA-EKE or N’EKE (That Creates); thus “CHINEKE” (The God That Creates or The Creator God).
“Chineke” was coined from the premise that Creation is the number one attribute that distinguishes the Almighty God from other Spirits.
By the way, a pre-christian look-alike of the title “Chineke” is the title “Chukwu Okike”, which means “God Of Creation”.
