CHUKWU/ GOD- Meanings & Pronunciation By Donald IfesinaChi (Dicn)
CHUKWU: Chukwu is an Ancient Igbo title for God Almighty and a few other mighty deities, especially ones associated with the sky.
The title/ name Chukwu is a combination of two words, namely “CHI” (God or Deity) and “UKWU” (Big or Mighty); thus “Big God” or “Mighty God”.
By the phonetic standards of Igbo language however, the alphabet “I” in “Chi” needs to fall off for “Chi” and “Ukwu” to be easily pronounced as one word, thus “CHUKWU”.
At the advent of Christianity in Igboland, the title “Chukwu” got adopted by early Igbo Christians as the most suitable existing title for God Almighty. It is accepted and used till present day.
By the way, some families bear Chukwu as Surname; a tradition that is rooted in an ancient Igbo practice of families bearing names of deities they are loyal to as surnames.
